MOMOYAMA period nearly complete suit of Japanese Samurai armor. This suit is in very good condition for its age and does match. It also comes with an unusually thick cedar plank box in excellent condition. I did not purchase this armor with a kabuto. I feel that it is better to sell it on its own as is rather than attempt to match it with a kabuto. Please NOTE that this is a MOMOYAMA period suit of armor, it is older and rarer than what you commonly see selling.

Description:

DOU (cuirass)

The dou is of the okegawa (horizontal plate) construction, composed of horizontal plates that are riveted together. This dou is of particular lightweight construction. This type of preservation is something that can be seen in armors that have been well cared for throughout history. The fact that this armor was still being cared for and properly treated later in life is testimony to the importance placed on it. I believe that at the time that the lacquer was redone on this piece and the new kusazuri added, it was also likely that the kikkou (quilted iron plates around the neck and shoulder) were added. There are no new cracks in the lacquer and what is left is strong and safe because of restauration.

KOTE and SUNEATE

The kote and suneate are in excellent condition with very minute lacquer loss that might appear as a chip here or there. There are no visible cracks and the condition is good and stable. The design is simple and what one would expect from kote and suneate from the Momoyama period. I believe the fabric to be early, possibly dating to the same eras as when they were made. The fabric on the kote and suneate matches and is made of a very fine ASA which is a hemp like fabric which is used in the highest quality kimono usually summer kimono. It has been dyed with a very strong red dye possibly ochre.

HITSU (Box)

The box is an unusual in several ways. First of all, it is not the standard kiri wood that is common for most armor boxes, and is also plagued by wood worms. This box is composed of Sugi, which is Japanese cedar. I have found in years of experience that boxes made out of sugi tend to last much longer and many daimyo grade armors have boxes composed of thick planks of sugi rather than kiri. Anyway, this is a very nice unusual, storage box, albeit devoid of metal ornaments.
