This uncommonly encountered British cutlass dates from the Napoleonic wars and the first third of XIXth century. Curved blade is 57 cm long, 4 cm wide and nearly one cm thick at the ricasso. Both the cutlass and scabbard are in excellent condition overall, without any evidence of rust or pitting. The blade still retains its crispness, and there is no evidence of it ever being sharpened. Blade has a 19 cm false edge. The hilt is of brass with shark or ray skin wrapped around the fluted handle. The locking mechanism on the hilt is in fine shape as well. The scabbard is of leather with brass furniture. Leather on the scabbard frog is in delicate condition. A nice uniform dark olive-colored patina covers all the brass parts of the hilt and the scabbard furniture. This is a fine and scarce example of the British weaponry from the age of sail and would make a worthy addition to an advanced collector's armory of edged weapons. Very rare item. Price: 1.650 euros |
